What is Mouth Taping?

Jun 10, 2025

Mouth taping is the practice of applying a small strip of adhesive tape over your lips before bedtime to keep your mouth closed during sleep. The ultimate aim is to encourage nasal breathing, which can have a range of health benefits.

You might be wondering if there's any scientific basis for mouth taping. There is evidence to support its use. A 2020 study investigated the effectiveness of lip tape as a tool to assess nasal breathing. The researchers aimed to determine if tolerance to lip taping could help identify individuals at risk of mouth breathing.

Participants, including 315 children aged 3 to 11 years, were asked to breathe nasally for three minutes with their mouths taped. The study found that most participants who reported mouth breathing or had moderate to severe nasal breathing difficulties could still comfortably breathe through their noses for at least three minutes. Over 80% of those who mouth breathed almost all the time while awake passed the lip-taping test.

This study showed that breathing with your mouth closed is possible and effective, even in children who are habitual mouth breathers. 配图.jpg
